Richard Spencer currently serves as the editor-in-chief of In Touch Weekly, which he created and oversaw the successful launch of in 2002. Spencer, a twelve-year veteran at Bauer Publishing, began his tenure as the editor-in-chief of Soap Opera Update from 1995-1996 where he doubled the bi-weekly sales in the first year. Additionally he launched Bauer's Life Story, a series of single-subject biography magazines, on such popular stars as Leonardo DiCaprio, Jessica Simpson, 'N Sync and Britney Spears.

In 1999, Spencer created J-14 Magazine, currently the newsstand leader in the teen category. At the end of 2000, J-14 was the third largest circulation gainer, nearing half a million in single copy sales. Spencer also helped create the new tween publication M, and saw it quickly become the fastest growing teen magazine on the newsstand. Spencer briefly lent his talents to Bauer's other teen title, TWIST, before the launch of In Touch.
