) -- Bauer Publishing announced today the appointment of Richard Spencer to Editor-in-Chief of Life & Style Weekly, adding to his current role of Editor-in-Chief of In Touch Weekly. The announcement was made today by Hubert Boehle, CEO of Bauer Publishing.
Under Spencer's leadership, In Touch Weekly has become the fastest-growing celebrity weekly, and it continues to draw new readers, with a rate base of 1.2 million. Year-to-date (January-September), the celebrity weekly has run 773.8 ad pages, up more than 20% compared to the same period last year. Revenues are up 29% to over $100 million year-to-date. Life & Style has also seen increased growth, with year-to-date ad pages up 41% versus the same period last year, and revenue is up 76%.
"Richard's leadership at In Touch Weekly has led to overwhelming success of the magazine," said Hubert Boehle, CEO of Bauer Publishing. "His masterful direction and management will continue to grow both In Touch and Life & Style. Our success in the world of celebrity culture will only get stronger under his continued direction."
Both magazines will continue to operate with separate staffs and each publication will have independent news gathering resources.
Spencer has been with Bauer Publishing for twelve years, and was editor-in-chief of Soap Opera Update from 1995-1996 where he doubled the bi-weekly sales in the first year. Additionally he launched Bauer's Life Story, a series of single-subject biography magazines on such popular stars as Leonardo DiCaprio, Spice Girls, 'N Sync and Britney Spears. In 1999, Spencer created J-14 Magazine, currently the market leader in the "tween" magazine category. Spencer is replacing Mark Pasetsky, who will be returning to his consulting firm Mark Allen & Company and will continue working with Bauer on various branding initiatives.
